Say goodbye to surprise slippery sections! DRE’s new Local Debris feature not only warns you about track debris but shares this intel with other DRE drivers in your session for maximum awareness.
I’ve got something that’s going to save your lap times and possibly your virtual race car. The latest DRE update, 2024.2.2 introduces support for Local Debris flags on track, and it’s a game-changer.
If you’ve been racing in the new iRacing 2025 Season 2 build, you’ve probably noticed those red and yellow striped flags that appear shortly before you encounter debris. They’re helpful, sure, but they disappear after your first pass, even though the debris is still there slowing you down. Not ideal.
That’s where DRE steps in to make those flags actually useful.
Early Warning System
Here’s something I discovered during testing: DRE actually warns you about debris a few seconds before the simulator’s flag appears.
Those extra seconds might not sound like much, but when you’re approaching a corner at 150mph, they’re the difference between a controlled adjustment and a surprise slide into the gravel. I’ve saved myself from embarrassing spins multiple times thanks to this early heads-up.
The simulator typically displays the flag just one second before you hit the debris zone. One. Second. Even my caffeine-addled reflexes can’t react properly to that. DRE gives you the breathing room you actually need.
Shared Intelligence Network
This is where things get really interesting. The debris information is shared across all DRE users in the same session.
Think about it: normally, only you can see the local debris flag affecting your car. But with DRE, if another driver with DRE encounters debris on turn 3, you’ll know about it before you even get there. It’s like having spotters all around the track working just for you.
I was testing this at Circuit Zandvoort last week, and while I was in the garage adjusting my setup, DRE warned me about fresh debris at turn 7—discovered by another driver. When I went out, I was already prepared for it. Magic.
Extended Tracking That Doesn’t Forget
Unlike the simulator, which seemingly develops amnesia after you drive through debris once, DRE remembers these danger zones.
A debris zone stays active in DRE until either 30 minutes have passed since the last car drove through it, or 30 cars have passed over it (creating those clean tire tracks). This means you won’t be caught off guard by “invisible” debris that the sim has stopped flagging but is still affecting grip.
The Analytics Track Map clearly displays these zones with red and yellow striped markings, giving you a perfect visual reference of where to be careful. It’s like having x-ray vision for track conditions.

Talking To Your Engineer About Debris
Want to know where all the debris is? Just ask!
You can simply say things like “Where is the debris currently?” or “Any debris on track?” and DRE will give you a complete rundown of what’s out there. It’s like having a conversation with a real race engineer who’s keeping tabs on everything.
You can customize how many times you want to hear debris alerts for the same zone. Free users get alerted for 1 pass, while Essentials users or higher get 3 passes by default. If you’re like me and have the memory of a goldfish, you can crank this up to 20 passes in the settings.
Race Strategy Impacts
This feature isn’t just about avoiding surprises—it’s a strategic advantage.
Knowing exactly where grip is compromised lets you make smarter decisions about when to push and when to be conservative. You’ll know if current track conditions will allow for those peak lap times, or if you should hold back until things clean up.
In a race, this information gives you a genuine edge. While other drivers might be caught out by unexpected grip changes, you’ll be gliding through with confidence, having adjusted your line slightly to compensate for that debris on the apex.
I’ve already used this to gain positions when other drivers go sliding off after pushing too hard through unmarked debris zones. Their misfortune, my gain. I’m not proud of it… well, maybe a little.
So if you’re tired of being caught out by invisible marbles and debris that the sim forgot to keep warning you about, download the latest DRE update and experience this debris detection network for yourself.
Your lap times (and your ego) will thank me later.
